Designer Statement:

Approaching the design for Free was a special experience because the film fully relies on the visceral experience of the images to express the emotions of the characters without any dialogue. 

The director and I wanted to use space, color and lighting to express the difference between love and loss, past and present, and set a tone for the overall look of the film.

Throughout the film the past is represented with fullness within the space, bright light and the love between them is in the color orange. The present is much emptier with clutter, darker and saturated in blue representing the problems that have always been there but now are not hidden.
